Entry requirements

To be eligible for our course, you must:

  • Have a first degree (2.2. or above) from a recognised UK higher education institution
    (or equivalent overseas Qualification - see below)

  • Have GCSE Grade C or higher (or equivalent) in English, Mathematics, and Science (see below)

  • Experience of observing or working with children in the Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 2. At least two weeks school experience is normally required as part of the selection process.

  • Be an effective reader and be able to communicate clearly and accurately in Standard English.

Applicants for teacher training must hold an A-C pass in GCSE in English, Maths and Science or a qualification of equivalent level and breadth of subject. We do NOT, for example, accept Level 2 certificates in Adult Literacy or Adult Numeracy as we have been advised by the TDA that there is insufficient breadth of information studied in these courses for entry to teacher training.

We will accept equivalence passes from Equivalence Testing  - 01277-203336 or A*Star Teachers on 0207-272-7070. You must have provided evidence of passing these tests to us by the February preceding the September start.

You must also possess personal and intellectual qualities as deemed appropriate by us, and meet the Secretary of State's requirements for physical and mental Fitness to Teach, as detailed in the Department for Children, Schools, Families R1.5d Qualifying Teach (2007)

Applicants with non-British qualifications

If you hold a degree or other qualifications from a non-UK institution, you must verify their equivalence through the National Recognition Information Centre for the UK (UK NARIC):

Tel: 01242 260 010

You will also need to supply written evidence of this information with your application.

Applicants who don't hold Maths English, Science GCSE Grade C

If you do not hold a GCSE in Maths or English at grade C or above or an equivalent qualification, Mathematics and English language tests can be taken at Newham College of Further Education;

A*Star Teachers
Tel: (0207) 272 7070

A pass in these tests will be acknowledged by SCITTELS as being equivalent to Grade C or above at GCSE/GCE O-level.

Science equivalency tests can also be arranged by the same person at Newham College of Further Education if needed.
