Graduate Training Programme Frequently Asked Questions How much will I get paid? Salary for the GTP course is in the region of £18,200. Some allowance for prior work may be taken into consideration in your training year and additional payment may be made for this. Such cases are made on an individual basis and in negotiation with the employing head teacher.
The contract you sign with the school is for the duration of your training only. Schools do offer jobs to their GTP trainees, but this is not always possible. However, having supported trainees through their training year, Newham is looking for commitment beyond this and may offer you the possibility of a position in another Newham school via the ‘pool’ system.
Once you have successfully completed the course interview a school interview will be arranged. If you come to us with the support of a school within the consortium (listed in general information) then you will still have to undertake the course interview but the school interview may be a formality.
Two school interviews can be arranged for candidates who are unsuccessful or who feel the school is not suited to their needs.
This is an employment-based route so all of your time will be spent in a school environment. You will spend at least 150 days within the classroom setting and recieve at least 60 days training.
Increasing responsibility for the class will develop throughout the year, and this is based on individual ability and needs. Graduate teachers with considerable experience prior to the programme may have more responsibility sooner than those who have come from another context. Responsibility for the class is undertaken only with the full approval of the employing head teacher. |
